DNA Detection and Documentation with red or green DNA dyes

The FastGene® Blue/Green LED technology enables the detection of red dyes, such as Ethidium Bromide and of our next generation green dyes Midori Green. Both dyes can be visualized using the amber filter on top of the unit.

Get great results right after you start. The simplicity of the system guarantees a quick learning process. Images are saved in the established jpeg and tiff format format, allowing you to use any imaging program to review your image. Additionally, the images can be saved in PNG and BMP format as well.

Touchscreen Operation


The FastGene® FAS-V is controlled by a 10.4″ touchscreen display:

  • All three light sources can be activated and deactivated by the touchscreen.
  • The exposure time and Gain can be adjusted slide function or by directly adding the desired value.
  • Capturing the image can be achieved easily by pressing capture

The FastGene® FAS-V will not only take 1 picture but 6 simultaneously using different exposure times. The user can then decide which one to use.


The chosen image is then saved in JPEG, TIFF, BMP or PNG-format (BMP is selected in the image)


Blue/Green LED Transilluminator

Blue/Green LED technology enables the detection of red and green DNA dyes. The FastGene® FAS-V has the biggest Blue/Green LED Transilluminator yet. The huge imaging area is 26 cm x 21 cm big and has a superb uniform transillumination. This is guaranteed by 12 LED arrays at each side.

White LED Transilluminator

The detection of protein is possible due to the very large white LED table (26 cm x 21 cm). This table can be directly controlled using the touchscreen.

White LED Room light

The documentation of membranes and Petri dishes is done by switching on the room light LED. Two perfectly placed LED arrays illuminate the whole imaging box. Black or white background can be chosen to increase or decrease the contrast.

Optical Unit

Very sensitive CCD-Sensor

The FastGene® FAS-V has a big CCD-Sensor, made in Japan, with a diameter of 1/1.8“. The pixel size of 4.4 µm allows the detection of lowest light signal. Images can be recorded in the common TIFF and JPEG as well as in BMP and PNG format. The files can be stored in the 16 GB internal SSD storage or on a USB-stick.

The exposure time of the sensor can be set from 0.001 sec up to 30 sec. The very short exposure guarantees that even the brightest DNA band will be still within the dynamic range. Exposing the sensor for up to 30 sec will enable the detection even of the faintest bands.


Very bright parfocal lens – no more focusing:

The lens of the FastGene® FAS-V is parfocal, as most microscopic lenses and prefocused on the imaging area. This enables you to zoom in to the area of interest without having to readjust the focus.

The huge aperture* of f/1.2 enables the transmission of light to the sensor. The aperture can be regulated steplessly until complete closure, making it your decision which aperture delivers the best image.

The 6 x zoom, with a focal length of 12.5 mm to 75 mm, allows a perfect enlargement of the area of interest. Setting the lens at 12.5 mm allows the imaging of the complete illuminated area, while zooming into 75 mm will eliminate any unnecessary area.

Recorded images can be directly edited in the FastGene® FAS-V:

  1. The image can be cropped using your finger or a stylus.
  2. Increase the contrast of the image
  3. The image can be rotated clockwise and anti-clockwise
  4. The image can be vertically and horizontally mirrored
  5. Reduce printing costs by inverting the image

What is the benefit of CCD camera?

A CCD sensor has the highest sensitivity and a linear signal acquisition, enabling quantification of DNA Bands.


The FasV has a 2mp camera and other have 5mp. Isn’t that much better?

The resolution is not really important, as the gel sizes are not big. A detailed image is guaranteed by the zoom, enabling the documentation of single bands. The more important feature is the sensitivity of the sensor, which is superb at the FAS-V (0.13 Lux, Normal dy light 100,000 Lux).


How flexible is the software?

The editing software can label, crop, change contrast, rotate and mirror the image, invert, print the image. There is also a quantification software as separate product. This software can analyse and quantify the bands documented by the FAS-V.


What are the parameters than can be analyzed with?

Quantification software: Automatic removal of background, automatic lane and band determination, determination of molecular size when compared to a known standard, determination of signal intensity and quantification of DNA/Protein when compared to a known standard.


What is the benefit of a removable filter?

DNA and proteins can be recorded. Our filter is comparable with green DNA dyes (Midori) or red DNA dyes (EtBr). To document protein gels, the filter has to be removed (very easy).


Is it possible to set the device up using DHCP for networking?

The FAS-V has no DHCP setting function. It is required to setup a fixed IP. Please make sure the mask and gateway IP is also set up properly.


Is it possible to have different user accounts?

It is not possible to have different user accounts. But you can create for every user an individual folder, so that every user will have an overview over his pictures.


Does the Fas-V has a sleeping mode or do I have to switch it off?

The Fas-V switches in sleeping mode. You can set the time in the operating menu.


Is the glass on the Blue/Green Transilluminator replaceable?

The glass itself is not replaceable since we need to make it watertight. There is however the option of replacing the table should anything happen. Small hint from my side if the agarose gel band cutter is not an option: Purchasing an acrylic glass plate from the local DYI-store and using it as a cutting board on top of the illuminator might do the trick.


Can the system be connected to the computer directly?

GP-FAS-V can be connected via network, but only to save images.


 Can the system be connected to a printer?

Yes, to the P95DE


Can I take colored pictured with the FAS-V?

The camera is monochrome. So this is not possible.

    Das Gerät ist seit über 1 Jahr in unserem Labor sowohl in der Diagnostik als auch in der Forschung im Gebrauch.
    Für diagnostische Gele verwenden wir Ethidiumbromid, in der Forschung kommt ein SYBR-Farbstoff zum Einsatz.
    Die Kombination aus Ethidiumbromid und den manuellen Kameraeinstellungsmöglichkeiten zusammen mit der Gerätesoftware erlaubt uns in der Diagnostik, auch sehr schwache Banden zusammen mit stärkeren optimal darzustellen. In Vergleichsversuchen ließ sich kein Unterschied zwischen UV-Anregung und der Verwendung der Blau/Grün-LED Technologie feststellen.
    Desweiteren bietet die LED-Technologie einen schonenden Umgang mit DNA für Klonierungsexperimente.
    Das FasV-System bietet daher ein breites Anwendungsspektrum und ist nach unserer Erfahrung empfehlenswert.

    Wir haben das Gerät nun bereits seit über 1,5 Jahren in Gebrauch und sind äußerst zufrieden. Das FAS V Geldokumentationssystem hat uns durch seine Blau/Grün LED-Technologie überzeugt. Für das Anfärben der DNA im Gel verwenden wir den Midori-Green-Farbstoff und diese Kombination von Farbstoff und Geldokumentationssystem liefert uns optimale Ergebnisse. Im Vergleich zu Systemen mit UV-Licht und Verwendung von EtBr ist nun das Ausschneiden von Gelbanden sowohl für den Anwender als auch die Proben sicher geworden.     Wir haben uns initial für den Erwerb der Fas V Geldokumentation mit CCD-Sensor entschieden, da uns vor allem die integrierte grün-blaue LED Technologie angesprochen hat. Mit ihrer Hilfe können nicht nur die Haut und Augen des Anwenders geschützt werden, sondern gleichzeitig auch die untersuchten Proben. Für die Färbung unserer DNA in den Gelen verwenden wir den Farbstoff RotiSafe, aber auch diverse andere Farbstoffe lassen sich problemlos detektieren. Die Fas V mit der grün-blauen LED Technologie steht den herkömmlichen UV-basierten Geldokumentationen in nichts nach. Die Gelbanden können auch in niedrigen Konzentrationen einwandfrei erkannt werden. Darüber hinaus besteht die Möglichkeit mit dem integrierten Weißlicht auch fertige Westernblots zu fotografieren.
    Der Betriebsablauf gestaltet sich deutlich simpler und schneller, als es bei unserem vorherigen Gerät der Fall war. Durch die gleichzeitige Aufnahme von 6 Bildern in verschiedenen Belichtungsstärken bekommt man nahezu immer eine sehr gute Aufnahme seines Gels in erstaunlich kurzer Zeit.

    We decided to purchase the FAS-V Gel Documentation system with its CCD sensor, because we were very interested in the integrated Blue/Green LED technology. This light protects the skin and eye of the user and is also safe for the examined samples. For the staining of our DNA we use the dye RotiSafe, but also other dyes can be detected easily. The FAS V with the Blue/Green LED technology has no disadvantages compared to conventional UV-based gel documentations systems. Even at low concentration it is possible to visualized DNA bands. Furthermore, with the integrated white light it is possible to document finished Wester blots. Working with the FAS V is simpler and faster than with our previous device. Because of the simultaneously recording of 6 images with different exposure values you always get very good images of your gel in a very short time. We are very satisfied with the FAS V and can recommend the device in good conscience.

    FAS-V imager is a very convenient device with great optics and manual controls over image acquisition. Of special note is a sensitive camera producing sharp images in a wide range of signal intensities.

    Main convenience over other imagers is high sensitivity and low background, thus, allowing economise on gel stains (2-5 time less can be used); and the manual adjustment of the focus, the zoom and the orifice. Since all the adjustment rings are close to each other, it all can be set with one hand and with immediate effect observed on the screen. Additional digital adjustments with Gain and Gamma options also helpful to get the most from the image. Adjustable “Image size” option gives is very convenient to accommodate gels of various sizes.

    In our department, FAS-V is used for imaging of DNA/RNA gels stained with SybrSafe and for Coomassie protein gels. In addition, we found it very useful for screening fluorescent GFP –tagged vs non-tagged colonies on agar surface. The imager is also capable of imaging bioluminescent bacteria (equipped with bacterial luciferase LuxAB) as both colonies on agar surface and in liquid in quantitative manner.

    I am very satisfied and I would certainly recommend FAS-V for other users.

    This imager can be further improved though:

    1. The screen angle has to be more “horizontal” to be well seen from the height of an average person.

    2. Extra USB ports needed to accommodate more than one USB connected devices: wireless mouse and memory stick

    To give more functionality: Exchangeable filters (perhaps a revolver) can be added to allow for imaging not only GFP but also mCherry and, probably, other fluorescent proteins, many users asked for it.

    Wir verwenden das Gerät Fas-V um z.B PCR-Produkte sichtbar zu machen. Hierbei verwenden wir den Farbstoff SYBR Safe. Jedoch verwenden wir das Gerät nicht nur um DNA, sondern auch RNA sichtbar zu machen. Diese werden mit Ethidiumbromid angefärbt. Sowohl SYBR Safe als auch Ethidiumbromid stellen kein Problem für das Gerät Fas-V dar. Was wir persönlich an dieser Technologie so toll finden ist zum einen, dass das Blau-Grünlicht kaum die DNA schädigt und zum anderen, dass es nicht gefährlich für die eigene Person ist. Mit der Filterbrille kann man direkt auf das Gel schauen und beurteilen ob z.B. die PCR erfolgreich war, ohne das Gel erst fotografieren zu müssen. Auch die integrierte Weißlichtplatte ist sehr praktisch. Bei Bedarf klappt man diese einfach an der Seite herunter und zieht sie hervor. Somit erspart man sich das Umstecken von externen Platten. Ein Bild von einem Film oder z.B. einer Platte ist schnell gemacht (allerdings nur in schwarz-weiß).
    Die Bedienung des Geräts über das Touchpad ist sehr modern und angenehm. Datum, Uhrzeit, Titel und auch Bildeinstellungen werden auf dem Bild abgebildet, wenn man das möchte. Ein kleiner zusätzliches Thermoprinter ermöglicht ein schnelles Festhalten der Ergebnisse im Laborbuch!
    Ein super kompaktes und benutzerfreundliches Gerät, welches sehr zu empfehlen ist!

    We use the FAS-V gel documentation system to visualize PCR-products. For that we use the DNA dye SYBR safe. Additionally, besides DNA we also use the system to visualize RNA, which was stained with ethidium bromide. Both dyes are no problem for the FAS-V gel documentation system. Personally, the two biggest advantages of the Blue/Green light is that the light is not damaging the DNA and is
    not dangerous for the user. Using the included filter goggles, it is possible to determine the success of the PCR without having to take an image of the gel first.
    The white light LED illuminator is very handy too. When needed, the plate is turned down and positioned centrally without having to reconnect external illuminator and taking an image of an X-ray film or dish is very easy (although only monochrome). The handling of the system using the touchscreen is pretty modern and comfortable. Date, time, a title and the image recording settings are saved on the image, if one wants to have it. An additional thermoprinter does the documentation in a lab journal very quick.
    A super compact and user-friendly system, which we heavily recommend!
